The Mets announced today that they have added six players to the 40-man roster, five of whom are prospects that are now protected from the Rule 5 Draft. Besides dding Greg Burke, a right-handed pitcher they signed earlier this week, the Mets added Zack Wheeler, Hansel Robles, Gonzalez Germen, Darin Gorski, and Wilfredo Tovar.
Teams tend to protect their top prospects from the upper minors or any other notable prospects who would be eligible for the Rule 5 Draft next month.
Overall, there really aren’t any surprises with the selections. All of these players (except for maybe Robles) would have a chance of being picked. Robles probably wouldn’t because of his inexperience.
The 40-man roster is a huge mess right now for the Mets. They have two guys — Cesar Puello and Juan Lagares– who are developing very slowly and not close to being ready for the big leagues. Also on the roster is Reese Havens, who will probably get his last chance with the Mets in Spring Training before getting either traded or cut. Frankly, I think trading him would make sense just to give the team some roster flexibility. Hopefully, they’ll get some relief when (and if) they non-tender Andres Torres, Mike Pelfrey, or Manny Acosta.
The Rule 5 Draft takes place December 6 in conjunction with the winter meetings.
