Mets Complete Shoppach Deal By Sending Pedro Beato To Boston

According to Keith Law of ESPN.com, the Mets have completed the Kelly Shoppach deal with the Red Sox by sending Pedro Beato to Boston .

Boston traded Shoppach to the Mets earlier this week in return for a player to be named later.

Beato was acquired in the Rule 5 draft in December 2010. Last season in 60 games, Beato had a 4.30 ERA (67 innings) while striking out 5.2 batters per nine. This season, he has spent most of his time pitching in Triple-A. In 4.1 innings over seven appearances, Beato has allowed five runs on five hits.

Beato was a first-round pick in 2006 when he was selected by the Orioles. Before 2007, he was ranked number 99 in Baseball America‘s pre-season top 100 prospect list. However, he never panned out for the Orioles, who let him go in the Rule 5 draft. He has been decent for the Mets, but this really isn’t a big deal. He really doesn’t have much value. Even if you think he does have some potential, the Mets are getting a good catcher in return.

Speaking of Shoppach, he is in the lineup for tonight’s series finale against the Reds.
