The Mets have acquired catcher Kelly Shoppach from the Red Sox in exchange for a
player to be named later, the Mets announced today.
Shoppach, 32, has been on the Mets radar for a while and gives the Mets the backup catcher they so desperately needed. He will platoon with Josh Thole, who has shown recently that he may not be the long-term answer at catcher.
Shoppach, in 48 games with Boston this season, has hit .250 this year. He also has a .327 on-base percentage and .471 slugging percentage. He had his best year in 2008 with the Indians, when he hit 21 homers in 112 games.
He can become a free agent after this season.
