Johan Santana Placed On Disabled List With Ankle Injury

Johan Santana has been placed on the 15-day DL with a right ankle sprain. Santana suffered the injury a few weeks back when Reed Johnson stepped on his foot while Santana was covering first base.

Since then, Johan has had some major problems on the mound. He has allowed at least six runs in three straight starts. He has struggled with his command and hasn’t looked like the same pitcher. I guess it’s comforting to know that it was an injury and not just Santana getting older or a shoulder injury.

In Santana’s place, the Mets have called up Jeremy Hefner. Hefner, 26, has a 5.64 ERA in 30.1 innings with the Mets this season. He made three starts this year and wasn’t particularly great in any of them. Hefner will likely be available out of the bullpen today with the spot starter Miguel Batista pitching and then on Wednesday when Santana’s turn in the rotation comes around.

Matt Harvey could now get the call sometime on the west coast road trip coming up. It’s difficult to imagine the Mets having both Hefner and Miguel Batista in the rotation for an extended period of time.

The 33 year-old Santana was 6-7 on the season with a 3.98 ERA in 19 starts.
