Mets Draft Shortstop Gavin Cecchini With 12th Pick

The Mets have selected high school shortstop Gavin Cecchini with the 12th pick in the 2012 MLB First Year Player Draft.

Here is his ESPN.com scouting report:

Gavin is a premier high school shortstop out of Louisiana who has a well-rounded game and all the tools to stick at the position. In the infield he has good range and a solid arm. He tends to drop his arm on some of his throws which causes the ball to sail, but that will be an easy fix at the next level. This past August in the 2011 Area Code Games, Cecchini looked outstanding working the double play with fellow teammate C.J. Hinojosa.

At the plate Cecchini has a level line-drive swing with gap power. He looks to have a solid hit tool with average power. He has a long stride which creates a lot of his momentum moving forward, but he stays back and always squares up the ball.

His older brother, Garin, was a fourth round pick of the Boston Red Sox in the 2010 draft. Gavin looks to one-up his brother by being projected as a first round pick in this upcoming 2012 MLB draft.

Cecchini has already committed to Ole Miss.
