Reaction: Murphy and Reyes injuries

Daniel Murphy and Jose Reyes both left today’s game against the Braves with injuries.

Jose, who was on the disabled list last month with a tight hamstring, aggravated the same injury today, sometime in the first two innings. Reyes has often had his name thrown around in National League MVP talks and is leading the league in hitting at .336, 10 points behind Ryan Braun, who is in second. This injury, if it causes him to miss significant time, will likely cost him a shot at winning the award. He had an MRI this afternoon at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, but results are yet to come back. Reyes may go on the DL again, as a precautionary measure, to give him enough time to recover and keep this injury from flaring up.

Murphy’s injury seemed to be much more serious. Not only did he immediately appear to be hurt, but he had to be helped off the field by two of the trainers. He was wincing and appeared to be in great pain as he limped off the field. Murphy, who tore his MCL in his right knee last year, causing him the season, this was his left knee this time, but he could miss the rest of the season.

These injuries make a Met playoff run seem even more impossible, especially if Jose Reyes goes on the DL. If they both go on the DL, Angel Pagan will assume the leadoff role, where he is hitting just .217 this season. With Murphy out, David Wright could move into the third spot, with Scott Hairston taking the everyday cleanup role. Ouch.
